Abseil  Module

 

Level 1

                  Aim: To teach basic abseil techniques including:

  • When is abseiling used
  • The dangers of abseiling
  • How to reduce exposure to risk.  BTM*
  • The basic equipment needed
  • Knowledge and practical skills required to achieve Level 1.

Assessment for Level 1
Under the supervision of, but without advice from, the Instructor, The Student will:

  • Prepare equipment
  • Tie into safety rope 
  • Climb to the platform on safety rope. (Subject to order from the Instructor)
  • Make himself secure to a strong point using daisy chain and krab
  • Set up abseil device
  • Carry out BTM check
  • Unclip daisy chain and secure to harness without releasing abseil rope.
  • Abseil safely and under complete control back to the ground.

Bottom            Is the rope long enough? If in doubt always use a KNOT.

Top                    Is the anchor point secure? Is the rope correctly attached?

Middle            Check your Abseil device, safety backup and harness

 

 

Abseil  Module

Level 2    
Aim: To develop practical understanding of abseiling and protection systems including;

  • Using a single rope to create double abseil rope
  • Simple rope recovery
  • How to assess top anchor safety
  • Importance of having a knot in the bottom of the rope
  • Use of klemheist/prussic knot for safety backup

 

Assessment for Level 2
Under supervision of, but without advice from the Instructor, the student will:

  • Coil the rope and secure to back
  • Select the other equipment needed and secure on their harness appropriately.
  • Tie into safety rope 
  • Climb to the platform on safety rope. (Subject to order from the Instructor)
  • Clip daisy chain to safety point
  • Thread abseil rope through designated strong point
  • Tie the ends of the rope together using figure of 8
  • Lower knot to the ground carefully keeping the ropes evenly together
  • Tie klemheist round twin ropes and secure to leg loop with a screw gate krab
  • Place abseil device on twin ropes and secure to daisy chain close to the belay loop
  • Carry out BTM safety checks
  • Unclip the daisy chain and secure to harness
  • Abseil safely and under complete control back to the ground. (Instructor on safety rope)
  • Recover the rope

Abseil Challenges
Level 3    

Aim: Consolidation of basic skills, solving problems including:

  • Use of mechanical abseil protection devices
  • Use of knots to secure top of recoverable twin rope systems
  • Recovery of twin rope systems
  • Setting up a releasable abseil rope using Italian hitch
  • Abseiling past a knot
  • Use of a range of abseiling devices

Assessment for Level 3
At all times on a safety rope and under direct Instructor supervision, 
the student will:

  • Make secure at the top of a climb
  • Set up abseil using knotted twin ropes.
  • Attach abseil device and appropriate safety backup.
  • Make safe descent
  • Recover ropes
  • Abseil past a knot
  • Set up a releasable abseil rope
